FAQs

About the program

The Provider Discount Network is a health discount program with more than 250,000 provider locations across the country that offer discounts on medical care. You still get all the same cash benefits of your insurance plan, but use of this value-added service can help you save even more. Discount networks are another way AARP is working to help you maximize your health care benefits and minimize your out-of-pocket costs. When you visit a participating physician or facility, you'll save typically 10 to 35 percent off regular rates.

Important: Keep in mind that not all services available through the Provider Discount Network are covered under your AARP Health plan. You can use the network for a variety of services covered under your AARP Health plan as well as many uncovered services. There are no restrictions as to how often you can use the network. The Provider Discount Network program is NOT an insurance program.

  • Using the Provider Discount Network saves you money!
  • If you visit a Provider Discount Network practitioner for a service that is covered under your AARP Health plan, you'll pay less. You'll still receive the full cash benefit amount, which means more money in your pocket.
  • If you visit a Provider Discount Network practitioner for a service that is not covered under your AARP Health plan, your overall out-of-pocket costs will be reduced, typically by 10 to 35 percent.

Provider Discount Network is not health insurance. It is a health discount program that offers savings on a wide range of health care services. With Provider Discount Network, you are responsible for the full cost of any services you purchase, minus the applicable discount. This will enable you to pay reduced rates on many out-of-pocket health care services you would otherwise purchase at full price.

The Provider Discount Network complements your AARP Health plan by offering discounted rates on many health care services. When you visit a participating physician or facility, you'll save typically 10 to 35 percent off regular rates. You still get all the same cash benefits of your insurance plan, but use of this value-added service can help you save even more.

Finding a provider

No. The network is provided as a way to help you get more value out of your AARP Health plan. Use of the network is completely voluntary. Under the terms of your AARP Health plan, you can visit any health care professional or facility you wish. However, you'll save money if you use a provider in the discount network.

As long as you follow the confirmation process, you are guaranteed to receive the appropriate discount. If you do not receive the appropriate discount, you will receive a refund for the difference between what you paid and what you should have paid.

Making an appointment

Yes. In order to guarantee that you receive your discount, you must follow the confirmation process before each visit to a network provider. This means you must select a provider and request a confirmation letter. Then you will need to take your confirmation letter, AARP Health medical ID card AND your Provider Discount Network card each time you visit your provider.

Confirming the discount rate and taking the confirmation letter with you to your visit helps ensure that the Provider Discount Network provider applies the appropriate discount to your bill. The rate confirmation also contains instructions for you. Note: The confirmation simply guarantees you will receive a discount if you visit the selected provider. You are under no obligation to visit the selected provider.

For services not covered by your AARP Health plan or above plan limits, hospitals in the Provider Discount Network are prepared to work with members to arrange a payment schedule. However, your confirmation is required in order to assist in coordinating your hospital admission. When you call AARP Health Customer Care, a representative will explain how to schedule your admission.

You can choose to pay at the time of your visit, or the provider can submit the bill on your behalf. If you choose to pay at the time of your visit, the provider will apply the discount. If you choose NOT to pay at the time of your visit, the provider submits the bill for your discount. After the discount is applied, your claim will be processed.
